LEER South Sudan (Reuters) - A surge in the number of emaciated children arriving at a feeding center in Leer, a muddy rebel-held town in South Sudan's oil-rich Unity State, is fuelling fears that the world's newest nation is on the brink of famine.

JUBA (Reuters) - South Sudan can only avoid famine if a shaky ceasefire holds and people displaced by more than five months of fighting are able to return home in the next few weeks to plant crops before the rains, a senior U.N. official said.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Humanitarian aid groups are in a "race against the rain to prevent famine" in impoverished South Sudan where violence has displaced more than one million people in the past four months, European Union aid chief Kristalina Georgieva said.
