KHARTOUM - An unconfirmed number of people have been killed on the third day of protests going on in several cities in The Sudan, reported Radio Dabanga Wednesday.
Eyewitnesses reported security forces pulled back from several roadblocks in Omdurman after firing teargas and live bullets. They are guarding fuel stations after several have been burned.
The killing of a popular businessman ignited demonstrations a week earlier in Nyala, killing at least five protesters.
Rallies started again on Monday after President Omar Al-Bashir announced the lifting of fuel subsidies leading to rising prices of fuel and commodities.
An estimated 300 people on Monday took part in a demonstration in Wad Madani, a university town in Al Gezira state. Security forces responded with violence after protesters burned the local office of the ruling National Congress Party, Radio Dabanga said.
Demonstrations were reported in Khartoum, Bahri, Kassala, Kosti and Atbara, Radio Dabanga added.
Yasir Arman, Secretary General of the rebel movement Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), stated in a press release Wednesday “Sudanese security forces are using live bullets and excessive force against peaceful demonstrators.”
He estimated more than ten people have been killed and hundreds were arrested.
Arman declared that Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) rebel coalition and the SPLM-N support the peaceful protests in Sudan.
