TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Libya has stopped several boats packed with Africans trying to reach Italy's shores in the past three days, detaining more than 600 immigrants, a security official said on Tuesday.

CATANIA, Italy/LUXEMBOURG (Reuters) - The European Union proposed doubling the size of its Mediterranean search and rescue operations on Monday, as the first bodies were brought ashore of as many as 900 people feared killed in the deadliest known shipwreck of migrants trying to reach Europe.

GENEVA (Reuters) - The European Union should take a "more sophisticated, more courageous and less callous approach" to migrants who often die trying to reach the EU in boats that are not seaworthy, U.N. human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said on Monday.

DURBAN, South Africa (Reuters) - South Africa's influential Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini described recent anti-immigrant attacks as "vile" on Monday, defending himself against claims previous comments he made about foreigners sparked the unrest.
