JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa remains committed to maintaining friendly relations with Nigeria after Abuja recalled its ambassador to Pretoria in the wake of attacks on immigrants, the department of international relations said on Sunday.

Migrant rescue mission must extend closer to Libya: Amnesty International

CATANIA, Italy (Reuters) - European efforts to save the lives of migrants drowning in the Mediterranean must involve search and rescue operations near the shores of Libya, Amnesty International said on Saturday as hundreds more people arrived in Italy from North Africa.

LONDON (Reuters) - Traffickers smuggling migrants across the Mediterranean are more likely to lock Africans, including women and children, into packed boat holds than Syrians and others from the Middle East, an official who interviewed survivors said on Friday.

LONDON (Reuters) - The United Nations human rights chief on Friday called on Britain to tackle hate speech in the tabloid press after a columnist compared migrants to "cockroaches" and advocated using gunboats to stop them from coming to Europe.
